Acupuncture

How can I help you?
Acupuncture is versatile. You may be experiencing pain, living with a long-term condition or dealing with a more recent problem. You may feel fatigued, anxious or just that something is not quite right. Many people find acupuncture relaxing and use it to relieve tension. Acupuncture can also be part of routine general healthcare.
I will listen to what is affecting you, what you would like to change and what else may be relevant to your health. Your treatment will then be planned around you rather than simply the name of your condition.
New to Acupuncture?
At each visit, we will discuss your general health. I will look at your tongue and feel your pulse, which can provide information about patterns of health in traditional Chinese medicine.
Then, while you lie comfortably on a treatment couch, I will usually begin by palpating around your body for areas of discomfort, tension or weakness. I will then insert very fine needles at selected acupuncture points.
Your comfort is an important part of the treatment. I will check in with you as we go. Usually, the areas being treated can be reached by removing socks or rolling up sleeves or trouser legs.
For some treatments, such as treating the back or a local area of pain, some clothing may need to be removed. Your privacy and dignity remain the priority.
Do I need to get undressed?
Acupuncture needles are very fine. You may feel a sensation as a needle is inserted, but this usually passes quickly. Once the needles are in place, many people find the treatment soothing.
Is acupuncture painful?
People respond to acupuncture differently. I recommend allowing yourself time to rest and to pay attention to how you feel following treatment.
What will I feel afterwards?
Acupuncture has a history of over two thousand years and remains a vast and fascinating area of study. Today, it is practised around the world and is the subject of extensive research.
If you would like to explore acupuncture and its use in different health conditions for yourself, the British Acupuncture Council has an excellent A–Z guide.

About Joe
Before acupuncture I worked as a support worker in forensic and community mental health settings. That experience showed me every day how closely our physical and emotional wellbeing are connected.
My initial interest in bodywork led to a three-year course in the study and practice of Shiatsu massage. This, in turn, took me to a degree course in acupuncture.
Acupuncture continues to impress me in that it addresses a person's humanity while remaining clinical and without becoming sentimental.
Learning acupuncture has helped shape the way I think about Western medicine. Its wonders are self-evident, but my reservations lie with the system itself, which increasingly reduces people to data and profit — to measurements and numbers.
The human body is a fascinating and sophisticated system, with the ability to heal and self-regulate. Yet much about how it works remains unknown. The same can be said of acupuncture. The ‘hows’ and the ‘whys’ are important, of course, but for me it is the effects that really matter.
Acupuncture and Western medicine are not opposing approaches. They should complement each other as part of an integrated approach to healthcare.
“The Chinese system is not less logical than the Western, just less analytical.”
